Writing by hand is still essential

In the middle of everything else, computers in particular, I spend some time with just pencil and paper. Adding a few details, measures or pages to a septet for the moment, and once this is done, a piece for chamber orchestra.

Writing scores by hand, with a pencil, has become more rare these days. Obviously it is a lot less practical than typing a score in using a computer, but there is still some things I find easier sitting with the paper in front of me, than staring on a computer screen, and listening to things. I think it is essential to master both working procedures, and I don't find it difficult to change between the two. Not even to change between an abstract sounding music for acoustic instrument ensembles, to a more playful rock/jazz'y music, or electronic pop'ish music. It is an interesting challenge to develop music in various directions, and find stuff.
